For years, the overnight trip between Bengaluru and Mumbai has meant one of two things: a flight, or a long train ride on routes that wander through Karnataka and Maharashtra. A Vande Bharat Sleeper on this corridor could change that. Reports this month say the service may begin around November 1, 2026, and searches for its timings and fares have jumped.
Most of what is circulating comes from railway sources quoted in the media, not from an official timetable. Here is what has been reported so far, and what is still unconfirmed.
Launch date: November 1, but not official yet
Several outlets, including Business Today and Native Planet, report that the train is expected to be flagged off on November 1, with one report suggesting regular passenger services would begin a day later. The Railway Ministry has not confirmed the date or the timetable.
Route and stops
The reported route runs from KSR Bengaluru to Mumbai CSMT through Andhra Pradesh, northern Karnataka and Maharashtra. The stops mentioned in reports are:
- Anantapur
- Guntakal
- Raichur
- Kalaburagi
- Solapur
- Pune
- Kalyan
The train is not reported to pass through Hubballi or Belagavi. Requests for halts at Dharmavaram, Puttaparthi and Hindupur have also not made it into the current plan, according to Deccan Chronicle.
Bengaluru-Mumbai Vande Bharat Sleeper timings
Two sets of timings are doing the rounds, and they don’t match:
- Version 1: departs Bengaluru at 7:50 pm, reaches Mumbai at 11:55 am the next day.
- Version 2: departs Bengaluru at 10:00 pm, reaches Mumbai at 1:50 pm the next day.
The return is reported to leave Mumbai at either 8:10 pm or 10:30 pm. Both versions put the journey at roughly 16 hours. The train is expected to run six days a week.

Expected fare
No official fare has been published. Indicative fares mentioned in reports are:
- AC 3-tier: about ₹2,684
- AC 2-tier: about ₹3,466
- AC First Class: about ₹4,250
Final fares can also change once catering options, GST and reservation charges are added, so treat these as rough guides until IRCTC opens bookings.
The train itself
The service is reported to use two 16-coach Vande Bharat Sleeper trainsets built by BEML (Bharat Earth Movers Ltd), with about 823 berths across three AC classes. The sleeper version of Vande Bharat is already running in the east, on the Howrah–Kamakhya route, so this would be among the first long-distance sleeper Vande Bharat services in the south and west.
Who this could matter to
Bengaluru and Mumbai are two of India’s busiest business cities, and Pune sits in between with its own large IT and auto workforce. An overnight train that leaves after office hours and arrives by late morning could appeal to people who travel often for work, families who find last-minute airfares steep, and students moving between the three cities. Whether it competes with flights will depend a lot on the final fare and how often seats are available.

Questions to think about
- Will a 16-hour overnight train pull business travellers away from 90-minute flights, or mainly serve families and students?
- Should stops be added in smaller towns like Puttaparthi and Hindupur, even if it adds travel time?
- Should Indian Railways publish timings and fares well before launch, so people can plan?
